Doctors prepared for questions from the press
The question
We will shortly be publishing a new guideline on the surgical removal of tonsils and adenoids. There has been rather a lot of coverage on the subject in the press. How can we prepare ourselves?
The answer
The good news is that the new guideline endorses the existing practices of the ENT doctors to a high degree. The bad news is that good news is no news. The guideline will not attract much attention. Nevertheless we advised ENT doctors to be well prepared. We composed a press release, a background document and a question-and-answer list. Three committee members attended media training.
The result
The publication of the guideline received scant press coverage. But shortly afterwards an American journal published a Dutch study that appeared to contradict the guideline. Then good preparation proved its worth. The ENT association convincingly refuted the article.
